Structural changes to the Computer Classes – more defined assessment criteria in place

Posted By Ashish

There have been structural changes made to the GDL computer classes. After getting a lot of constructive feedback in one of our daily ‘grill sessions’, I did realize that the class was starting to move towards mediocrity – the students were getting frustrated with the teacher, the teacher was losing passion in the course, and it was showing in the discipline in the class. The same day, I had a heart-to-heart with the teacher on how to improve the course. We decided to increase daily contact, and communicate through written class assessment. We also decided to implement weekly tests that count towards 10% of the overall grade, and 5 Unit tests that count for 50%. On top of that, there would be a week long team project that makes students practice real life skills, as well as learn how to manage time and work in teams. It would all culminate in a final exam. What really got everyone going was the passion cut off – 80%. My argument – we only teach students the basics that the industry demands, they better know all of it.

The first week we administered a test in MS Word, and it actually helped a lot. Firstly, it really gave us a snapshot into the real progress of the students – while everyone used to always get their exercises done, it showed us the students who were really taking a lot of time, and help and support from their peers to complete their task. Secondly, it shook the ‘troublemakers’ of the class: smart students who don’t apply themselves. Thirdly, it recognized students who worked diligently and were ahead of the curve, giving them a sense of pride in their achievement.

After having a stern talk with the teacher on his performance and professionalism, I’ve noticed changes and an upshot in commitment. I feel the frustration with the students is limited to the morning class too – the evening class is quite OK with him, the afternoon class really likes him. I think the students in the morning class who are moving fast don’t have much faith in his ability to teach, and are looking for something extra. It calls for hiring a good teacher who we can anchor the courses around, and more preparation time with the current teacher.
